Machu Picchu Ruins - Article

The Machu Picchu ruins have been shrouded in mystery regarding their origins and purpose to this very day.  The ruins of Machu Picchu, rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham, are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. While the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top (9060 feet elevation), erecting many hundreds of stone structures from the early 1400's, legends and myths indicate that Machu Picchu (meaning 'Old Peak' in the Quechua language) was revered as a sacred place from a far earlier time.

Invisible from below and completely self-contained, surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the population, and watered by natural springs, Machu Picchu seems to have been utilized by the Inca as a secret ceremonial city.

Every year thousands of travelers visit this Inca citadel not only looking forward to treading in this ancient city but also get to know the surrounding communities.  Aguas Calientes is the tow which is at the foothill of the Machu Picchu ruins.  Here you will most likely spend the night before heading to the lost city the following morning; it has a large variety of restaurants of local delicacies as well as a good amount of pizzerias and local burger joints.  It is also a great place to gather supplies before heading to the Machu Picchu ruins thanks to its many shops and drug stores, remember the altitude and heat are not a good combination; you will likely have to keep hydrated and this is the place to get bottled water, insect repellent (in case its mosquito season) and altitude medicine if needed.

Once you actually arrive at the Machu Picchu ruins remember to have a professional guide already waiting for you at the entrance.  This person should be experienced and ready to answer any and all questions you might have about this ancient Inca city, including current events regarding it; let’s not forget that it is one of the newly appointed seven world wonders.  This guide should be preciously arranged for you by your travel operators.  Perurooms.com is a professional travel agency with years of experience putting together customized Peru vacation packages for tourists from all over the world.
