Travelling to Tambopata National Reserve offers a rare opportunity to discover a lively biodiversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and trees. Record-setting numbers of animal species are concentrated within small areas, and the variety of plant life is greater than almost anywhere in the world. To help you experience the wonder of this magic place, you will find below a suggested itinerary for your stay.
First Day :
Welcome in Puerto Maldonado. You may visit
near the airport, check-in, and in only 15 minutes you can get to the boarding wharf. Begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Inkaterra Butterfly House Madre de Dios River, to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge. After a short briefing, settle into your beautiful cabaña and enjoy your lunch in the dining room. Take a siesta, share a refreshing tea time and get ready for the afternoon excursion.
After gathering with your Inkaterra Interpreter, choose from the 14 different excursions available at the Inkaterra lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the
, into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. We also recommend on the first night our
— a guided afternoon boat ride on the Twilight River excursion Madre de Dios river. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and big caimans.
We will gather at The Eco Center and present all available excursions. Enjoy the dinner, served in the main dining room from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. After dinner, you may retire early to your own
cabaña, or join us to talk about the experience of life in the rainforest, as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night.
Rest in bed or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
This morning you may visit the
into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. After lunch, consider visit the remarkable
. Ascending the first tower, 29 meters above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this hour-and-a-half expedition, be on the lookout for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees and there is a possibility to see serpents of this flooded marshland. Once at the lodge, enjoy the daily nature presentation in the Ecomedia Center. Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy a trip to
, located 45 minutes by boat from the Inkaterra lodge. For two and a half hours, explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds. When you reach the embarkation point, board a canoe and navigate your way back downstream, appreciating the abundant flora and fauna along the way. You will return to Gamitana Farm in time for a well-earned picnic lunch, followed by a short guided tour to see how local farmers raise fruits and vegetables. Return to the lodge. Gamitana Creek
Make time for relaxation, with our special services at ENA Spa, located on the banks of the
Madre de Dios River, facing Rolin Island— a great spot for watching an Amazonian sunset. The ENA Spa is available from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., offering traditional massage, aromatherapy and reflexology services, with a choice of Inkaterra fragrances.
Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you may visit Inkaterra Butterfly House . Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects.
Inkaterra Butterfly House RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
This one-hour-long activity provides you with an introduction to the amazing world of butterflies at the Inkaterra Butterfly House in Puerto Maldonado. The house is located near the airport. The reserves of Tambopata and Peru hold various records in butterflies’ species numbers; there are 3,700 species in Peru, and many of these can be found at the house of Butterflies, which showcases the varied beauty and adaptability of these colorful insects.

Trail System RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
A walk to one of the trails that extend 7,3 kilometers (4,5 miles) in Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Natural Reserve and you will discover the incredible realm of the Amazon rainforest. The trails offer an excellent introduction to the environment of the jungle, as you walk past exotic rainforest trees, such as the lupuna tree and the beautiful ficus. Look down and spot the tiny lizards that rustle the leaves as they dart about on the forest floor. Gaze at the treetops and be amazed with the arena for bird watching. Observe the insect life – iridescent beetles and interpretation of the primary and secondary rain forest components, as well as human impact, and the relevance of the rainforests of the world.

Twilight River excursion RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
On this guided afternoon boat ride, you will witness the enchanting transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal environment, as animals and birds of the daytime are replaced by species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits while searching for nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans. In addition, on a clear night the southern hemisphere stars can be appreciated.

Sandoval Lake excursion RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
A 30-minute boat ride takes you to the Tambopata National Reserve, where wildlife surrounds you as you enjoy the one and a half hour walk along three kilometers of trails to reach Lake Sandoval. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, macaws, prehistoric hoatzins, also called “shanshos”, anacondas, point-tailed palm creepers and side-neck turtles. You will spend two hours on the lake, looking at all is has to offer.

Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & The Anaconda Walk RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
A five-minute boat ride takes you to the Canopy Inkaterra Interpretation Center. After ascending the first tower, at 29 meters above the forest floor, you will literally walk through the treetops for one-and-a-half hours along suspension bridges that link eight observation platforms. Enjoy landscapes and vistas that would be unimaginable from below, while on the look.-out for giant strangler fig trees, orchids, toucans, woodpeckers, trogons and –with luck- monkeys or sloths. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. G amitana Creek
Long walk following the Gamitana creek. 1 ½-hour walk through a narrow trail towards “Sanipanga”. 1-hour canoe ride down stream to the Gamitana Model Farm. Interpretation of creek ecosystems. Walk through the Model Farm. Return to the lodge by boat.
