Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is a gracious rainforest lodge, adjacent to the lush Tambopata National Reserve. Remote and pristine, yet easily accessible, this region is only a 25-minute flight from Cusco. Here, in the area known as the Biodiversity Capital of Peru, the opportunity for discovering an incredible variety of species, bird, mammal, reptile, insect and tree, awaits visitors.

A welcoming haven situated at the heart of a 12,000 Ha (29,652-acre) private ecological reserve, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica offers a range of land and river excursions that introduce guests to the magic of rainforest. This simple yet gracious, limited-electricity lodge has been an ecotourism pioneer for more than 30 years, promoting innovate sustainable use of the Southern Peruvian Rainforest, and supporting important scientific investigations siince opening in 1975.

Travelling to Tambopata National Reserve offers a rare opportunity to discover a lively biodiversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and trees. Record-setting numbers of animal species are concentrated within small areas, and the variety of plant life is greater than almost anywhere in the world. To help you experience the wonder of this magic place, you will find below a suggested itinerary for your stay.

 First Day :
 

Welcome in Puerto Maldonado. You may visit Inkaterra Butterfly House near the airport, check-in, and in only 15 minutes you can get to the boarding wharf. Begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge. After a short briefing, settle into your beautiful cabaña and enjoy your lunch in the dining room. Take a siesta, share a refreshing tea time and get ready for the afternoon excursion.

After gathering with your Inkaterra Interpreter, choose from the 14 different excursions available at the Inkaterra lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the Trail system, into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects.

We also recommend on the first night our Twilight River excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios river. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and big caimans.

We will gather at The Eco Center and present all available excursions. Enjoy the dinner, served in the main dining room from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. After dinner, you may retire early to your own cabaña, or join us to talk about the experience of life in the rainforest, as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night.

Second Day:  

Rest in bed or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

This morning you may visit the Lake Sandoval excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Return to the Inkaterra lodge for lunch.

After lunch, consider visit the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and Anaconda Walk. Ascending the first tower, 29 meters above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this hour-and-a-half expedition, be on the lookout for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees and there is a possibility to see serpents of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge.

Once at the lodge, enjoy the daily nature presentation in the Ecomedia Center. Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you may visit Inkaterra Butterfly House. Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects.

• Inkaterra Butterfly House   RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
  This one-hour-long activity provides you with an introduction to the amazing world of butterflies at the Inkaterra Butterfly House in Puerto Maldonado. The house is located near the airport. The reserves of Tambopata and Peru hold various records in butterflies’ species numbers; there are 3,700 species in Peru, and many of these can be found at the house of Butterflies, which showcases the varied beauty and adaptability of these colorful insects.

• Trail System   RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
  A walk to one of the trails that extend 7,3 kilometers (4,5 miles) in Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Natural Reserve and you will discover the incredible realm of the Amazon rainforest. The trails offer an excellent introduction to the environment of the jungle, as you walk past exotic rainforest trees, such as the lupuna tree and the beautiful ficus. Look down and spot the tiny lizards that rustle the leaves as they dart about on the forest floor. Gaze at the treetops and be amazed with the arena for bird watching. Observe the insect life – iridescent beetles and interpretation of the primary and secondary rain forest components, as well as human impact, and the relevance of the rainforests of the world.

• Twilight River excursion  RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
  On this guided afternoon boat ride, you will witness the enchanting transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal environment, as animals and birds of the daytime are replaced by species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits while searching for nightjars, owls, capybaras and caimans. In addition, on a clear night the southern hemisphere stars can be appreciated.

• Sandoval Lake excursion   RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN
  

  A 30-minute boat ride takes you to the Tambopata National Reserve, where wildlife surrounds you as you enjoy the one and a half hour walk along three kilometers of trails to reach Lake Sandoval. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, macaws, prehistoric hoatzins, also called “shanshos”, anacondas, point-tailed palm creepers and side-neck turtles. You will spend two hours on the lake, looking at all is has to offer.

• Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & The Anaconda Walk   RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN  
  A five-minute boat ride takes you to the Canopy Inkaterra Interpretation Center. After ascending the first tower, at 29 meters above the forest floor, you will literally walk through the treetops for one-and-a-half hours along suspension bridges that link eight observation platforms. Enjoy landscapes and vistas that would be unimaginable from below, while on the look.-out for giant strangler fig trees, orchids, toucans, woodpeckers, trogons and –with luck- monkeys or sloths. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, serpents, birds, mammals and abundant flora and trees of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge.

• Gamitana Creek
  

  Long walk following the Gamitana creek. 1 ½-hour walk through a narrow trail towards “Sanipanga”. 1-hour canoe ride down stream to the Gamitana Model Farm. Interpretation of creek ecosystems. Walk through the Model Farm. Return to the lodge by boat.

Bathrobes and Andean rubber soled slippers are provided for your comfort. The open floor plan bathroom has an independent shower and toilet, plus double basins, hot water, sumptuous towels, and a complete set of ecologically friendly toiletries. A tall roof of fishtail palm tops four integrated rooms in these comfortable Ese’ Eja-style wooden cabañas (78 sq m/ 840 sq ft).The spacious bedroom has 1 king or two twin beds, with graceful mosquito-net canopy, all-cotton sheets, and 6 hypoallergenic pillows. Bathrobes and Andean rubber slippers are supplied for your comfort.
