Continue to Chan Chan, which spans an area of 20 square km, is the largest mud-brick citadel dating back to the pre-Hispanic era. The city was the urban center of a vast regional state which covered half of the Peruvian coast, stretching from Tumbes on the Ecuadorian border down as far south as Lima. All roads branched out from Chan Chan.
You will be taken then to Huanchaco Beach; it is famous for the ‘caballitos de totora’, which are lightweight boats made of ‘totora’ reeds that have been used to cut through the ocean since the time of the Mochicas and Chimus. The female mummy, baptized the Lady of Cao (450 A.D.), is the first female ruler of the Mochica culture and is considered one of the best-ever relics of a civilization that ended more than 1,300 years ago. The mummy was accompanied by ceremonial items including jewelry and weapons, and the remains of a teenage girl who had been sacrificed. Peruvian archaeologists, under the direction of lead scientist Regulo Franco, made the discovery in 2005 at this ancient ceremonial site known as El Brujo (The Wizard). In addition to the tattooed mummy of El Brujo complex, the museum exhibits weavings and ceramics from the Mochica culture, some of which date back 5,000 years.
