Peru Highlights
13 days/ 12 nights
Daily Departures

Day 1 - Tambopata Rainforest

Upon arrival, we will welcome you at the airport and drive you ten minutes to Puerto Maldonado lodge headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens you will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest at office safe deposit. This helps keep the boats and cargo light. Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is a communal business. The forty five minute boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Posada Amazonas will take us into the Community´s Primary Forest Private Reserve. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A bannistered staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From a top you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.
  Overnight: Lodge in Tambopata

Meal Plan: box lunch and dinner

Day 2 – Tambopata Rainforest tours

Breakfast at lodge. Tres Chimbadas is thirty minutes by boat and forty five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers. Otters are most active from dawn to eight or nine AM. Afterwards, visit to a parrot clay lick. This clay lick is only a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow- headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings and mid-afternoons. After lunch, a twenty minute boat drive downriver leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape. The Centro Ñape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
  Overnight:
Lodge in Tambopata

Meal Plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3 – Tambopata to Cusco

After breakfast, return to Puerto Maldonado. We retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, lodge’s office and the airport. Depending on airline schedules, this may require dawn departures.
Upon your arrival to Cusco City, the Capital of Inca Civilization, you will be picked up and taken to your hotel. Take it easy as soon as you arrive. Drink a lot of bottled water, coca-leaf tea and rest. Have a light, relaxing dinner.
  Overnight: In Cusco City

Meal Plan: breakfast

Day 4 – Cusco City Tour

Breakfast at hotel. Start a guided tour that will show you the amazing colonial city built on the foundations of the Inca palaces. You will visit the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. Then you will be driven to the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, to the underground cave and temple of Kenko, Puca Pucará and to Tambomachay, known as the Baths of the Inca.
In the evening have a ‘pisco sour’ –our national drink- at one of the lively cafes or bars near the Plaza de Armas.
  Overnight: In Cusco City

Meal Plan: breakfast

Day 5 – Sacred Valley of the Incas

Breakfast at hotel. Pick up in the morning from your hotel in Cusco. You will be driven through a scenic landscape to the Urubamba Valley, the ‘Sacred Valley of the Incas’. Arriving at the town of Pisac, an hour drive from Cusco, you will visit the colorful Pisac Market, where the locals meet to sell their merchandise as they have done it for centuries. There is also a handicraft market. Then continue toward Urubamba. Lunch included. The tour goes on to the town of Ollantaytambo from where you will climb up to its imposing Inca fortress at the top of the mountain. Drop off at your hotel.
Overnight: In Sacred Valley of the Incas

Meal Plan: breakfast and lunch

Day 6 – Train journey to Machu Picchu

Breakfast at Hotel. At the appropriate time, transfer to the train station. Departure of the rail coach through an amazing route. With glass surrounding them on all sides, passengers feel as if they are part of Peru's remarkable landscape. Snacks and hot and cold refreshments are included on the journey.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and accompanied to your hotel.

NOTE: depending on your physical condition, you may add a 3 to 4-hour trekking to Mandor Waterfalls. From town we will walk out along the road, and then pick up the railroad tracks which follow the river when the road ends. From here we view the steep mountain cliffs all around. After about an hour along the river, we will turn away from the river and head up a side stream toward the Mandor Waterfalls. The crystal-clear, freezing water flows between rocks producing a relaxing sound. Afterwards, we will go back to town.

Overnight: In Machupicchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes Village)

Meal Plan: breakfast

Day 7 – Machu Picchu ‘One of the New Seven Wonders of the World’

Wayna Picchu Mountain –only for those who are in good shape- (also if you have previously requested this entrance at the time of the booking; check with your travel advisor) for remarkable panoramic views and a truly unforgettable experience.
You will be informed in advance the time and meeting point with your guide to start your tour to the hidden gem of the Incas: Machu Picchu Citadel. At the end of the tour, limit yourself to taking a stroll around the Citadel. Head back by train to Cusco City in the evening. Finally transfer from Cusco Train Station to your Hotel.

The Nasca Lines are the most extraordinary legacy left by a culture that flourished in 300 BC. The lines are a series of complex designs, some up to 300 meters long which can only be seen in their true dimension from the sky, from an altitude of at least 1,500 feet. Drop off at your hotel.

Afternoon transfer to Nasca Bus Station to take a Premium Class Bus to Paracas Bay. This State protected natural area is, among its beaches and staggeringly beautiful rock formation, the refuge to sea lions, otters, Humboldt penguins, dolphins, and more than two hundred species of birds such as flamingos (parihuanas), waders, guano birds, and other migratory birds. As well you will look out across the hillside at the candlestick-like figure of the ‘Candelabro’, a geoglyph of more than 120meters or 394 feet long, carved into the sand with a similar technique to the Nazca Lines. It is better appreciated from the ocean.
