On the way to Chachapoyas, we will stop at Lamas for a guided visit. It is one of the oldest towns in the Peruvian jungle, located at 1000 masl / 3281 fasl at the top of a hill. This town possesses streets covered with logs and the main characteristic is the position of the terraces. They say that the first floor belonged to the Chancas who came from the south, the second story to the mestizos, and the third level was used as a lookout. Today, they maintain this division between the Indians, the Lamistas, and population of mixed races, who celebrate their patron saints separately. In spite of its jungle location, the town has the structure of a highland village, probably due to the origin of its inhabitants. The Wayku neighborhood is populated by descendents of the fierce Chanca Indians, who maintain their traditional ancestral customs.

Meal Plan: breakfast

Day 6 – Karajia Sarcophagi

Full day guided tour to Karajia Sarcophagi, approximately 48 km / 30 miles northeast of Chachapoyas (2 hours by car and another 20 minutes on foot). These coffins are pre-Inca tombs, some 1000 years old, implanted at the top of a cliff. They are 2 meters / 7 feet tall, sculpted in mud, and are decorated with geometric motives. In the evening, we will drive to Choctamal Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge. Choctamal is the gateway to Fortress Kuelap and Gran Vilaya, located in the high cloud forest. The Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge was built and donated to the village of Levanto by ‘Los Tambos Chachapoyanos’ to create a sustainable income as an incentive for them to preserve their resources. Spending the night at this community-owned lodge will give you the opportunity to observe one of the most beautiful and endangered hummingbirds in the world. Dawn is stunning, with imposing views of the mountains, cloud forest and villages along the route to the fortress of Kuelap from your balcony.

Day 8 – The Fortress of Kuelap or the 'Machu Picchu of Northern Peru'

This was the bastion of the Chachapoya tribe, a citadel whose access is through narrow walled passages like sloping funnels which helped to keep out invaders. This impressive stone fortress was built by the Chachapoya people, a fierce people that for years resisted the expansion of the Incas, around 800 A.D. It is located 3000 masl / 9843 fasl and is 6 hectares in surface. There are three defensive platforms; the first is 20 meters / 66 feet high and 680 meters / 2231 feet long. Its three entrances are walled alley-ways that narrow as they climb up to the following two platforms. Inside, there are 420 circular buildings decorated with rhomboidal and zigzag friezes. Kuelap is proof of the engineering skills of the Chachapoya tribe. The complex must have been impregnable to invading warriors from neighboring kingdoms, although finally the Inca soldiers managed to conquer them.

Ancient Peruvians were highly successful in integrating with nature. The Chachapoya, whose secrets still lie, buried in the dense jungle, created harmonic structures in a privileged site, a timeless land where the jungle-clad hills are wreathed by mist.

On the way back to Chachapoyas we can see the platforms of Macro, on the ridges of another mountain on the shores of the Utcubamba River.

 Breakfast at hotel.

Investigators have discovered indications of occupation from the pre-ceramic period. We will continue with a guided tour to its on-site Cao Museum. The female mummy, baptized the Lady of Cao (450 A.D.), is the first female ruler of the Mochica culture and is considered one of the best-ever relics of a civilization that ended more than 1,300 years ago. The mummy was accompanied by ceremonial items including jewelry and weapons, and the remains of a teenage girl who had been sacrificed. Peruvian archaeologists, under the direction of lead scientist Regulo Franco, made the discovery in 2005 at this ancient ceremonial site known as El Brujo (The Wizard). In addition to the tattooed mummy of El Brujo complex, the museum exhibits weavings and ceramics from the Mochica culture, some of which date back 5,000 years.

Day 13 – Chan Chan, the world's largest pre-Hispanic mud-brick citadel & Huanchaco beach

After breakfast at your Hotel, we will pick you up and start a private guided visit to The Dragon Huaca or Arco Iris (The Rainbow). This adobe pyramid is especially important since its construction was done at the beginning of the Chimu culture and at the end of the Tiahuanuco-Wari culture between the tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. Continue to Chan Chan, which spans an area of 20 square km, is the largest mud-brick citadel dating back to the pre-Hispanic era. The city was the urban center of a vast regional state which covered half of the Peruvian coast, stretching from Tumbes on the Ecuadorian border down as far south as Lima. All roads branched out from Chan Chan.

You will be taken then to Huanchaco Beach; it is famous for the ‘caballitos de totora’, which are lightweight boats made of ‘totora’ reeds that have been used to cut through the ocean since the time of the Mochicas and Chimus. There, you can enjoy exquisite seafood at your own expense or simply bask in the glory of a day at the beach.

These two important ceremonial centres are located only 8 km away from the City of Trujillo; these impressive monuments are more than 1,500 years old. Its polychrome big walls, on which they represented the Mochica divinity known as Ai-Apaec (Slaughterer God) are remarkable since they are very well preserved. It is thought that multiple human sacrifices were held to honour this god, rituals that have been captured in other elements of the Mochica iconography.
